Vietnam Begins Operation of a Chemical Database

The Vietnamese Chemicals Department of the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) has launched a chemical database system (only in Vietnamese). The database contains more than 170,000 chemicals. You can display the announcement by the MoIT here (only in Vietnamese).

The database has the following goals:

• Support all activities related to the Law on Chemicals
• Provide information to other departments of the MoIT
• Store statistical data for chemical risk assessment
• Provide information on hazardous properties and classification of chemicals to companies and communes
• Provide the information required to deal with chemical incidents

The database contains substances covered by the Law on Chemicals (Annex 1–5 of Regulation No. 113/2017/ND-CP) and those published in Vietnam’s national inventory draft. But it also provides links to material held in other chemicals databases and inventories, including:

• Japanese systems, including MITI numbers (Japan’s chemical reference numbers)
• The U.S. Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA)
• European inventories of chemical substances on the market
• Results of GHS classification
• Data on the physico-chemical properties of many substances

The project began as early as June 2012 and was supported by the Japanese Ministry for Economics, Trade, and Industry (METI), the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation, and the Japan International Cooperation Agency. At that time, the prime minister decided to create a national chemicals inventory and database.
