Hard Brexit: What You Absolutely Need to Do

Everything indicates that Great Britain will leave the EU on March 29, 2019 without a valid trade agreement in place (hard Brexit). The consequences for the entire economy are unforeseeable. In particular, companies that have registered chemicals in the framework of REACH should act now.

As a downstream user you should check to see if you purchase goods from the United Kingdom. As a co-registrant of a substance, you should also determine if your lead registrant is located in the UK. If that is the case, the registration would be invalid according to EU REACH as March 29 – assuming a hard Brexit – along with any co-registrations. Make sure you contact your leading registrant to determine that company’s plans for the registration. If the lead no longer requires an existing registration for UK REACH, the company can transfer the registration to another company.

Note: To maintain the marketability of your chemicals, you must find a new lead registrant within the EU. As a co-registrant, you yourself can take over this role. However, you would have to cover all the costs that would arise, such as those for the usage rights for studies.
In “How will the UK withdrawal affect you?”, the ECHA offers a variety of useful information.
