Future Focal Points for REACH Activities

The governments of European states must protect the high safety standards of REACH from TTIP and continue to improve the quality of authorization dossiers. That’s the challenge defined by Alexander Nies of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety (Bundesministerium für Umwelt, Naturschutz, Bau und Reaktorsicherheit: BMUB) at the CEFIC conference, “REACH and Beyond – Challenges and Possible Options for Improvements,” held in Brussels at the end of October.

Nies also appealed to the leaders of the ECHA to examine dossiers on substances suspected of being toxic to reproduction or development, with an especially critical eye.
All participants in the conference agreed that European companies must not suffer any competitive disadvantages. Imported articles that contain forbidden substances continue to appear on the market. According to a study by the Ministry for the Environment, the REACH guidelines can be enhanced to cover imported articles.
