EU Commission Updates Test Methods for REACH

The EU Commission has issued Regulation 2019/1390 and amended test methods.

The reasons for the change are the new testing methods of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). According to Article 13 Section 2 of Regulation 1907/2006, the test methods are to be examined and approved regularly. The goal is to lessen the number of animal experiments and vertebrates involved in testing.

Two new methods have been developed to evaluate ecotoxicity along with nine methods to determine toxicity to human health. Seven methods were updated. Eleven of the methods were studied in the context of in vitro experiments: Irritation and burning of the skin and eyes, skin sensitization, genotoxicity, and endocrine effects.

The Regulation appeared on September 26 in the Official Journal of the European Union. It took effect on October 16.
