China: Targeting Hazardous Substances
As of January 2016, China will strictly limit the use of six hazardous substances in passenger vehicles. The measure and others are part of a national sustainability plan that should improve the environmental scorecard of automobile manufacturers.
According to the Chinese Ministry for Industry and Information Technology (MITT), the new standard applies to Chinese manufacturers and international companies that have joint ventures with Chinese manufacturers. The rules affect passenger vehicles with fewer than nine seats.
The substances involved include lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs).
