Canada: Environmental Protection Act Enhanced for Nanomaterials

The Canadian Environmental Protection Act has been enhanced with a paragraph that affects Canadian manufacturers of nanomaterials and companies that import such materials into Canada. The regulation specifies a notification obligation for 206 substances with a particle size of 1–100 nanometers. As a comparison, the diameter of a human hair is 50,000–100,000 nanometers. Substances that are produced or imported in a quantity greater than 100 kilograms are also subject to notification.

The Canadian authorities must have the most comprehensive information available about the use of these substances to be able to assess their risks better and, if needed, define risk-management measures.
