Brazil Plans Legislation for Chemicals

The Brazilian Ministry of the Environment (Ministério do Meio Ambiente (MMA) wants to adopt appropriate laws by the end of the year. The officers of the ministry plan a national database for chemicals modeled on those of the European Union and Canada. The classification and labeling of chemicals should align with the Global Harmonized System (GHS).

The laws continue the government’s introduction of plans for consolidation. The Brazilian economy finds itself in the midst of a crisis right now. Production has declined, particularly in industry and construction, which has a negative effect on the country’s production of chemicals. According to figures given by the Association of the Chemical Industry, chemical production will decline by 5.5% in the current year. Currently, Brazil occupies eighth place among the world’s top 10 chemicals producers with revenues of about €92 billion. The country is far and away the most important South American commercial partner of the German chemical industry. That status makes the similarity of legislation for chemicals in both countries all the more important.
